Your Out of State Moving Checklist

  1. Pick a Mover with Out-of-State of Long Distance Capabilities

This might go without saying, but make sure the moving company you’re going with (if you choose to hire professional movers), has experience with out-of-state moves. Beware of scams and make sure you’re getting the best deal.

2. Keep a Budget Set

In order to make sure you don’t spend more than you have to on a moving company or rental truck, as well as materials and the move itself, make sure to keep a budget and map out your spending limits for every aspect of your move.

3. Keep an Inventory

Take stock of what’s in your house, and what condition it’s in. Determine what you want to bring, and what you might want to get rid of or leave behind.

4. Declutter

Now that you’ve taken an inventory of what you’ve got, it’s time to get rid of what you don’t need or want. Room by room, organize items into ‘donate’, ‘throw out’, and keep sections.

5. Organize

After you’ve eliminated what you’re not taking with you, organize similar remaining items together to make packing easy and efficient.

6. Get Packing Materials

Visit your moving company headquarters or a rental truck company to obtain boxes and other packing materials. You can also ask around businesses or friends for any boxes that you can reuse for your move to save money.

7. Pack Room by Room

Once you have your boxes, start packing nonessential items room by room to keep things organized and straightforward. Make sure to label your boxes and keep delicate items separate.

8. Update Your Address

Make sure your address is updated with the post office, banks, or credit card companies. This is a step easily, forgotten, but can be very annoying later on.

9. Transfer Utilities

Make sure to transfer any utilities in your new home to your name, and take your name off of the utilities at your old location. Make sure you’re not paying any extra bills!

10. Prepare Yourself

Once your things are all packed, get yourself and any items you’re keeping with you together to get ready for the journey. You’ve got this!
