History of Nigeria
Located in West Africa, Nigeria is the most populated country on the continent. Nigeria was ruled by local tribes for most of its existence. In order to combat the slave trade, Great Britain attacked ships leaving the Nigerian area that were thought to contain slaves. Great Britain gained control over the area in 1900, where it ruled for sixty years. In 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from Great Britain but was quickly involved in a civil war just 7 years later. Following the war and a military occupation, Nigeria became a full democratic nation in 1999.
