Moving Day Preparation

The day is finally here! You’re finally moving overseas and are about to embark on a whole new life in another country! Exciting times are ahead of you, but unfortunately, you have to get through the process of actually getting all of your things overseas before you can start exploring.

No two moves are the same, but some aspects of them are. Whether you’re moving across the street or across the ocean, organization and proactivity are key to making sure that your move goes smoothly, and to keep you as stress-free as possible on moving day. After all, you have a lot more to focus on! By being organized and starting earlier, you’ll make your entire process a lot easier.

Moving Abroad: What are the Differences

As you might expect, moving overseas is a little different than moving locally, and comes with its own set of unique perks and challenges alike. Whether you’re an American who has found a job overseas, studying abroad long-term, or whether you’re moving abroad for other reasons, there are some things that are different, and some that stay the same in the moving process. So what do you pack? What can you take with you? We’ve got all of your questions, answered.

Start Early

If there’s one thing you don’t want to do when tackling an international move, it’s leaving everything last minute. This isn’t something where you can really just throw last minute things into trash bags and run – you have to be organized and have a plan for everything.

Beyond the packing itself, a lot of countries require documents for visas for you to stay in their country long-term, which should be obtained as soon as possible to make sure you don’t face any setbacks.

Make a Checklist

Understandably, it’s easy to be a little all over the place before moving overseas. To stay organized and make sure you don’t forget anything (and have all of your documents figured out!), start making a checklist months ahead of time to keep everything in check, before it even needs to be kept in check.

Save Up

Just like with any move, moving internationally can be expensive. If you’re using professional movers like Allied International, you’ll need to account for the cost of your movers, plus any additional services you’ll need. Whether you’ll need a vehicle shipped overseas or additional storage services for things you can’t bring but don’t want to get rid of just yet, make sure you’ve saved up and have enough to cover everything you’ll need.

Figure Out What You’re Bringing With You

Since you’ll be moving separately from your things while they’re shipped overseas, it’s important to make sure you have enough items (clothing, toiletries, important electronics) with you to last until the rest of your stuff arrives. Check airline baggage restrictions and find what you can bring, and plan accordingly.

When moving internationally, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and disorganized quickly. However, just like with any move, if you start early, pack smartly, and effectively prepare yourself for anything that might happen during the course of your move, you’ll be all set to move successfully and enjoy your new life overseas.
