There can be a lot of reasons why you might find yourself suddenly having to pull off a successful last minute move. Whether it’s sudden job opportunities in other towns, states, or even countries, relocating or transferring unexpectedly for your existing job, not wanting to renew your lease, or just general unhappiness with your current environment or wanting a change of scenery are all reasons why you might find yourself having to move in 30 days or less. The prospect of suddenly having to pull off a move in a month or less on top of the existing stress of suddenly leaving your home and changing environments can be a challenging prospect for a lot of people. Where do you even start? Luckily, we’ve compiled 5 of the easiest tips that are both simple and extremely useful in making your last minute move a successful one – no matter what!
Now, you might be wondering why this tip would be first on our list, if actually moving is the last step in your process. The reason we recommend booking your moving company or putting in your reservation for a moving truck (if you’re pulling off a self move) first, is simply because of availability. If you’re moving in less than a month, especially during the height of moving reason, a lot of moving companies or self-moving trucks could already be booked solid for the foreseeable future. Get your reservation or booking confirmation in fast, so you don’t have to worry about it later on.
After making sure your moving company or truck is squared away, it’s time to start getting rid of any items you don’t need, use regularly, or want. It’s imperative that you don’t make things harder on yourself than they have to be and waste time packing up clothes and household items you haven’t touched in years. Take it room by room, and clear out, and donate anything you don’t want or need.
Now that you’ve narrowed down what you’re taking with you and what you’re getting rid of, it’s time to start preparing for your move itself. If you’re using a moving company, but aren’t utilizing professional packing services, see if they have packing materials for sale. If you’re a little strapped for cash amidst your sudden move, you can also ask friends or even hunt around stores and ask employees if they have any spare or old boxes or packing materials that might be good for moving.
Once you’ve secured boxes and other packing materials, start organizing and packing any non-essentials or items that you know you won’t absolutely need or use in the next couple of weeks. Starting one room at a time, organize items and pack them carefully and with other similar items to make sure everything is secure and won’t break on your journey. Make sure to label your boxes and keep fragile items together and away from heavier ones.
Once you’re closer to your moving day and have gotten a lot of your packing done, a small detail many forget about until after they’ve already moved is to notify the post office of your change in address for mail forwarding purposes. Additionally, make sure to update your billing addresses for all of your bank accounts and credit cards.
Now that you’ve figured out how to get your last minute move started out on the right foot, you’ve set yourself up for success. The key to a successful move is all in the organization and forethought involved – and you’ve got both of those skills! Good luck and happy moving!
